The drawings stink but I needed to get this off my mind.
So many people draw for example "Warriors" fanart with lots of threatening and fighting going on and have no idea what a cat looks like when things get serious.
I swear, they turn into demons! They get loud, they get ugly and terrible enough that even a human would think twice about approaching them.
Of course there are several levels of hostility but when the fur's about to fly they don't just stand there and look serious. x)

Wahaha... check this out for floofiness reference. [link]

This is really helpful! I knew some of this already but I didn't know they squinted or anything like that. But in hindsight it really does make sense!

:) Well it's all a matter of how serious the situation is. When the cat is still in staredown mode, it wouldn't squint, for example, and I have the impression that a cat also fluffs more heavily the more insecure or afraid it is, but generally I think the tut is still usable. Thanks!

True. Which is probably why I've never seen my kitten really squint when she's angry. She's not allowed to go outside (too many big, hostile cats in our neighborhood and she's tiny) so she naturally doesn't get into fights that much.

An angry cat is seriously more frightening than an angry dog. xD I think it's the sounds they make. A growling, barking dog is definitely something to avoid but an angry cat is a screeching demon. It's sad that artists often don't make use of the dramatic body language fighting cats use more often.

Thank you for this! I've certainly been around enough cats to understand these behaviors and postures, but it is still nice to be reminded! Also, I remember getting a number of comments on how 'tiny' my dragon's eyes were in pictures I had of them fighting, but this tutorial right here helps give evidence that they are just narrowed (as I guess subconsciously I've used cat posture to render my dragons, etc.) XP

Again, thanks and the drawings aren't really that bad - you're giving yourself too little credit!

Yeah, sometimes they poof up really easily. xD But when all the war-chanting and hissing starts - let's not mention cat fights - it gets downright frightening.

Really cool! Great example of what really happens when cats are angry. :D

I watched to feral cats fight today in my yard... it wasn't a big fight, but one was messing with the other and they both blew up like balloons. :P

I have a stub-tailed cat, and his tail looks like a little orange pom-pom when the fur stands on end. It's normally because he sees his shadow, though, and it scares him.

Haha, one of my cats fluffs up at the smallest bit of surprise. He pretends he's big and tough, but make a loud noise and he's under the bed in an instant.
My dog loves to tease him when he's all jumpy.

But when the fur flies, it can get scary. o.o There are tons of feral and stray cats around my house. When I first moved here I thought someone was killing a child in my backyard. XD

My own cat is rather small but makes up for that with her voice, especially when she's angry. She'd have been a heavy metal singer if she was human.

All so very true. I have 12 cats (possibly 11 if one doesn't come home) and I've seen and heard them fight. The fur really does fly!
I, personally, don't draw normal felines, but I still find this to be a very helpful little guide on drawing cats nonetheless. c:

Oh, thanks. She got out somehow and.. well, when she goes outside, she seems to forget who her 'Mama' is, so she reverts to wild instincts. :c And it's been two days since I saw her last. I think she's just happier being wild. I sure hope so.
But thanks for the concern. <3 I appreciate it.

Yes, she did after a few days. I guess she got hungry. xD;; She's fallen into a bit of a habit now. If we let her out, she'll vanish a couple of days, then she'll get hungry and come back. She's so funny. xD;

>_> Maybe I should bring a video camera to my work so you can have "real life examples!" to attach to this. Cats become almost literally possessed when they are mad indeed and people who draw them should always remember that a mad 10 lb cat is far scarier than a mad 100lb dog.

I've seen at least one of the levels of ';pissed-offedness' with my kitties. We brought a new kitty home one day and when our old cat came out to inspect, that little kitty poofed up to three times his size (especially his tail)! It was hilarious, especially since our old cat was still more 'WTF' than 'eek'!
